Overview

Summer Spiti Valley Circuit – Overview

The Summer Spiti Valley Circuit is a high-altitude Himalayan road trip covering some of the most remote and scenic regions of Himachal Pradesh. Starting from Delhi, the journey passes through Shimla, Sangla Valley, Chitkul, Kalpa, and gradually enters the cold desert region of Spiti via Nako, Tabo, and Dhankhar before reaching Kaza, the main hub of Spiti Valley.

This itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience dramatic mountain landscapes, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and unique high-altitude villages. The route includes iconic destinations such as Pin Valley National Park, Langza fossil village, Komic (one of the highest motorable villages in the world), Hikkim (world’s highest post office), Key Monastery, Kibber, Chicham Bridge, and Chandratal Lake.

The journey combines adventure, culture, and raw Himalayan beauty. Travelers experience long scenic drives, high mountain passes like Kunzum Pass, and overnight camping near Chandratal under a clear star-filled sky. The return route passes through Manali, completing a full Himalayan circuit back to Delhi.

This trip is suitable for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and photographers who want to explore one of India’s most isolated and breathtaking regions. It offers a mix of road travel, short walks, village exploration, and immersive cultural experiences in Tibetan-influenced Himalayan life.

Winter Spiti Valley – Overview

Spiti Valley in winter transforms into a surreal high-altitude desert covered under a thick blanket of snow, creating a stark and monochromatic landscape of extraordinary beauty. Known as the “Middle Land” between India and Tibet, this remote region becomes even more isolated during the winter months.

Ancient monasteries and remote villages such as Kibber and Komic stand frozen amidst snow-covered mountains, icy rivers, and rugged peaks. Life in the valley slows down significantly as temperatures drop well below freezing, offering a rare glimpse into the resilient lifestyle of the local communities who continue to live in extreme conditions.

Winter in Spiti is a season of silence and solitude, where the only sounds are of wind passing through the valleys. It is also one of the best times for wildlife enthusiasts, as the region becomes a prime destination for spotting the elusive Snow Leopard.

This season is ideal for travelers seeking raw Himalayan wilderness, isolation, and a deeply immersive experience in one of the most extreme environments in India.

Overview

Kinnaur Kailash Yatra – Overview

The Kinnaur Kailash Yatra is one of the most sacred and challenging pilgrimages in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the beautiful Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, the Yatra leads devotees and trekkers to the revered Kinnaur Kailash Shivling, a naturally formed vertical rock pillar standing at an altitude of approximately 4,650 meters (15,255 feet). According to Hindu beliefs, this sacred peak is the winter abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and holds immense spiritual significance.

The journey begins from Tangling Village near Reckong Peo and passes through dense pine forests, alpine meadows, rocky ridges, and high-altitude mountain terrain. Along the route, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the Kinnaur Valley, snow-clad Himalayan peaks, deep gorges, and traditional mountain villages. The final ascent to the Kinnaur Kailash Shivling is steep and demanding, making it both a spiritual pilgrimage and an adventurous trekking experience.

Overview

History Of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from Nepal is an ancient pilgrimage with thousands of years of history, revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bönpos as the abode of Lord Shiva or the axis of the universe. Historically accessed via high-altitude Himalayan passes, the route has shifted to the Kerung/Rasuwa or Humla borders following the 2015 earthquake.

Historical Highlights

  • Ancient Beginnings: The Yatra has been undertaken for thousands of years by yogis, sages, and devotees, with roots in Hindu Puranas and Tibetan texts.
  • Cultural Significance: Traditionally, Tibetans and Himalayan people (including Nepalese) managed the routes. The 53 km Kora (circumambulation) is central to the pilgrimage, done clockwise by Hindus and Buddhists and counterclockwise by Bön followers.
  • Interruption & Resumption: The 1950 Chinese occupation of Tibet and the 1962 Sino-Indian War stopped the Yatra. It officially resumed for foreigners via Nepal in 1981.
  • Modern Routes Via Nepal: Following the 2015 Nepal earthquake, which damaged the Tatopani–Zangmu crossing, the main route now passes through Rasuwagadhi–Gyirong, or via Simikot in Northwest Nepal.

Key Historical Details

  • Significance: It is believed to be the axis of the universe (Axis Mundi).
  • Structure: Traditionally a rigorous trek, it involves a 3-day, 53 km circumambulation involving the 5,650 m Dolma Pass.
  • Devotion: Some devotees perform “prostration,” taking up to 3 weeks to complete the journey.
