History and Legends of Chopta Tungnath Chandrashila
Chopta, also known as the “Mini Switzerland of India,” is a picturesque hamlet nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas. The trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila offers a perfect blend of adventure and spirituality. Tungnath, situated at an elevation of 3,680 meters, is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is considered to be over 1,000 years old. According to mythology, Lord Shiva’s arms are believed to have emerged at this sacred site when he took the form of a bull to avoid the Pandavas.
Chandrashila, which means “Moon Rock,” is a summit that offers panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. According to legends, Lord Rama meditated here after defeating Ravana, and the site is considered a place of divine power and meditation.
